This has been a big week for our country. The news media has not been bored. We officially have a new president to lead our country. There are protests of all kinds filling the nation and everyone seems to be in a state of unrest. What is happening to our great nation? Can God bless America in this state of chaos?
Perhaps as a mother, grandmother, or citizen of our country, you don’t want to meditate on this topic today. Meditation is supposed to be peaceful and relaxing. However, thinking about the state that our country is in right now is none of the above. Our country is at war with each other. In the days of the Civil War, it was simple. Pick a side North or South. Were you for slavery or against it? The civil war that our country is facing today is not as black and white. The issues that are dividing our country are growing by the minute. There is hatred for anyone that doesn’t agree with you. This is not a country at peace with each other. This is a country that is going to destroy itself.
Is it even possible to be so different and have so many differing opinions and still get along? It seems impossible. God tells us to look past all of this. He tells us to look at what he sees. We have more in common than we probably want to admit. We are all sinners. No one is perfect. We were all created by God. Most importantly, for those who have faith in God, we are all part of God’s body of believers. God sees believers as perfect and holy in his eyes. “After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church – for we are all members of his body.” (1 Corinthians 5:29, 30)
Things in the country seem so out of hand at the moment. Trying to change anything seems impossible from where I’m sitting. Then I remind myself of God’s saving promises. So today I’m reminding you. Let your light shine and it will continue to spread. Spread God’s Word and spread his gospel message. There is no room for violence and hatred if God’s love is filling people’s hearts instead of sin. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” (Colossians 3:15) When Christ rules in your heart, there is no room for sin. We can create change with God’s help. Pray for our nation, our leaders, and our citizens. Don’t lose hope and trust in God’s promises. God bless America!
My prayer today is stanza 3 of “Christ, By Heavenly Host Adored.”
Dear God, Give us rulers who will be Known for love and honesty: Let the pow’rs that you ordained Be in righteousness maintained. In the people’s hearts increase Love of piety and peace. Thus united, we shall stand One wide, free, and happy land. Amen.
